There will be no more delays for Microsoft's next operating system, as the company announced that Windows Vista will hit store shelves on January 30, 2007. It was Jim Allchin, co-president of Microsoft's platforms and service division, who broke the news via conference call, going on to state, "On January 30, you will be hard pressed to find a machine that doesn't have Windows Vista available." Vista is Allchin's last OS with the company, as he plans to retire once it successfully launches.

Business users will get their hands on the system a little earlier, with Microsoft promising to ship by November 30, at which point the OS will be available in English, French, German, Japanese, and Spanish. By the January launch 18 languages are expected to be ready.

News of the launch date's confirmation saw Microsoft's stock rise to US$28.98, showing gains of over 25% since June this year. Research firm IDC believes Vista will be installed on over 100 million machines within a year.
