Democrats Ready to Lead: Pelosi

11/09/2006 18:55:00

Democratic House Leader Nancy Pelosi says the Democrats are ready to lead.

One day after the Democrats seized control of the House of Representatives, Pelosi told reporters that Americans "spoke for change and they spoke for a new direction for all Americans."

Pelosi is set to become the first female speaker in history. She added voters specifically demanded a change in course on the war in Iraq and urged President George W. Bush "to listen to the voice of the people."

Bush called Pelosi with congratulations Wednesday morning.

Pelosi said she told Bush she was ready to work with him: "The success of the president is always good for the country, and I hope that we could work together for the American people. He said he thought that would happen and we would talk about it over lunch tomorrow."
